Key Concepts Research
Narrative - This is the way in which particular elements of a music video are put together to distribute a certain message out to an audience. This is used to create a story through the music which in further driven via the music video. The narrative is what can often interest an audience as they have something to follow which visually entertains them. Certain narratives can be used for certain genre's of music as it adds interest and they are altered to appeal to certain people in society.
Genre - Genre is a categorised area which has very distinct features and themes. A long with this genre often has a very strong, social stereotype which is often featured throughout music and music videos. This makes different genres very easy to distinguish from each other in a way that a audience can easily identify a genre which suits them best.
Representation - The way in which ideas and conventions are portrayed across to a target audience. Its the way in which a target audience will perceive these ideas and how it comes across to them from their perspective. The idea of why a particular person or prop is in a scene and what effect it has on the audience.
Audience - This is the consumers or customers of the product who will be viewing the particular music video. It also is strongly aimed towards a certain target audience who will find the music video appealing to them. This links in of the idea of how certain sounds, acting or theme have a particular appeal to different people. Also its what social classes that the particular music video appeals to such an ABC1 target audience or a CDE2 target audience.
Codes and Conventions- It is the idea of what the particular meaning or narrative has on a audience and how they will react to this. This is what makes up certain music videos and the certain themes in which it should contain. Also through certain codes and convention these are what make up certain genres. In certain genres such as rock there will conventions such as a lot of dark colours being used or heavy, dark scenes. These conventions are generally very stereotypical to a certain genre and will feature throughout their music videos.
Institution - The institution is also know as a conglomerate and is a company that owns various smaller institutions in mass media. These are the companies that own certain artists and they will produce there records and they will be involved in the distribution process of their products. They also have a strong influence on their music videos and the concepts that they want to portray across to an audience. Institutions also like to transition certain artist such as Miley Cyrus to make them more popular, appeal to a wider audience and grab a lot more social attention. These are all certain promotional techniques which help make a artist and their music successful.

1. What inspired you to be in the music industry?
- Inspired by art and people
reactions to it
- Foundation course at Uni for
art and film making, he enjoyed it and realized he was good at it.
2. What
was your biggest breakthrough in your career?
- Radiohead's song 'Just' was
Jamie's debut music video.
- It became big in the U.K and
went global in country's such as the U.S.A
- He stated that there was a
sense of 'luck' in securing the job for this song as the previous director
was fired.
3. Who’s
your favorite artist that you have worked with?
- He enjoyed working with all the
artists he directed music videos for but the ones that stood out the
most was Sam Smith and Radiohead.
4. What
is your favorite music video which you have produced?
- Coldplay - The Scientist
- Simply because it was a unique idea
that had not been done much before
- This video was hugely like by its target
audience and received a MTV award

would you say makes a successful music video?
- Good imagination
- Original/Unique idea
- Creative
- Likes to use the theme of
emotion or humor
6. What
genre of music is the easiest and the hardest, that you have found to make a
music video for?
- Jamie stated that it is down to personal
preference but from his point of view it is not down to the genre of music
it is more the fact if he can connected with the song or not.
- If he does not have a connection
with the song then he feels it wont be successful and will not
take the job.
7. Do you
prefer to produce music videos or films?
- Prefers making films
- This is due to the idea of satisfying a
audience for a much longer time
- Likes to tell a story either through music
videos or films.
8. How do
you come up with the story line for your music videos?
- He gets sent a song and he
will only decide to take the project to make the music video if he enjoys
track.
- Creates an idea and sits
down to confer with the artist to see what they think about it and will
adjust or change small bits accordingly.
- Jamie typically likes to
keep the basis of the song rather simple.

artists would you like to work with in the future?
- U2
- Beck
- Would of liked to work with Price
10. Do
you personally edit or get involved in the editing process of your music
videos?
- Used to edit manually, by
hand he would cut and stick the roll off film
- Learned to edit with new
technology
- Can do the process himself
but sometimes has a specific editing team who he works closely with who
does it for him.
